Reader Ask: What are the key differences between Ezra and Agni that make their relationship work for the better and the opposite

That’s a great question! Now that Ezra and Agni have accepted that they’re actually in a relationship, much of what you’re asking will be explored in Part Four. We’ll get a closer look at their dynamic and the nuances of their relationship. That being said, I can touch on some of it here.

Ironically, their differences are what balances them out, but those differences also cause contention.

Age, for one. Agni is ancient; he’s grown jaded. Having a younger lover gives him a new perspective on many things. As he told Svaha, Ezra’s youth is ‘infectious’ when it shines through. Contrarily, Ezra is blessed with the ambition to lead and make changes to systems that may seem broken. Having an older lover with such vast experiences and wisdom will allow him to remain on the right path and prevent any straying (assuming he actually adheres to Agni’s advice). You can also argue that their age difference is cause for discord and misunderstandings. Though Ezra is mature for his young age of twenty-two, he may display some immaturity that drives Agni mad, especially if Ezra isn’t listening to reason. Alternatively, as we’ve already seen hints of, Agni’s old age tends to harden his outlook on ideas and people (all entities, in general).

Then, there is empathy for others. Agni truly admires Ezra’s empathy and drive to defend those who cannot do so themselves. However, Ezra does tend to give too much of himself for a cause he believes strongly in. Because Agni isn’t as driven to exact that same level of dedication onto others, and because he is impossibly protective of Ezra, Agni will promptly intervene if he believes Ezra’s pushing himself too far. This lack of care for others will always cause discord between them, but Ezra may also benefit from someone looking out for his well-being.

Another difference between them that strengthens their relationship is their preferred roles in public. I’m not saying Agni isn’t good at politics or strategizing (he’s brilliant, really) but he is too tired/too impatient to deal with other people’s bullshit. Ezra can harness patience and charisma with politics, so Agni is happy to take a backseat and contribute any necessary advice.

Their diverse backgrounds may also cause some misunderstandings. Agni was raised in Svarga, whereas Ezra is quite bitter about all things god-centric. He may not understand or even entertain some traditions and practices that Agni respects or holds dear.

Differences aside, there is also the antagonistic attraction, the bickering, the intellect, and the clash of pigheadedness that make them a good pair 😉 Ezra reintroduces challenge and stimulation in Agni’s existence, and that is something that Agni cherishes. And while Ezra would deny it, he cherishes the prospect of Agni seeing him/knowing him so completely.
