[Reader Ask]: Hello lovely author, I hope you don’t think my questions are getting too much, I’m sorry I’m just really obsessed with these books and I can’t stop thinking of it. So my question is, why did Ezra protect the nobility who sent an assassin after him, I would have thought he would have taken the opportunity to seek retribution against them because after all they did try to take his life and endanger that of his teammates. I’m surprised he didn’t tell Sachiel about the assassination attempt even though it would be well within his rights to do so.
Hello, lovely reader. I don’t think your questions are too much at all, though I may not have the quickest response time! I find the questions a fun way to engage with readers and to answer questions others may have about the series. It also helps pass the time until the next release.
As far as your question goes, you are right. Ezra would have been within his rights to tell Sachiel about the assassination attempt. Moreso, he should have told Calder at the end of Inferior. I wouldn’t say his intentions were to protect the nobility, but there were a few reasons why he refrained from condemning them. In Part II, his reason for not telling Calder was to avoid his father’s overprotective tendencies. In Part III, he’d since come to terms with the attack and acknowledged Dushyanta’s influence across the capital. He knew the citizens weren’t in their right minds and were spurred by enmity. Furthermore, he didn’t know the sole culprit responsible. If there were a chance it was Seaton Edlen, then it would progress to something far more complicated. He knows Kai loves his father (despite the man’s faults), and he didn’t want to be the one to separate them.
Ultimately, as someone told me, there can’t be a bigger power move than conveying bored indifference in the face of an attempted assassination. By Ezra not even admitting that there’d been an attack, he demonstrates some big dick energy (for lack of a better term). 😉
Thanks for reaching out 🤍
